What is Continuous Professional Development and why is it important?

The Institute of Translation and Interpreting (UK) refers to Continuous Professional Development (CPD) as the ‘systematic maintenance, improvement and broadening of knowledge and skills’.

As with all professionals, translators and interpreters can achieve higher level of skills and efficiency quickly with the help of CPD. Learning should not stop once a formal qualification is obtained: keeping up-to-date with the latest developments and techniques, improving knowledge of the chosen specialist areas are the key to being a successful professional.

In 2013, Lingvajet conducted research among a sample of translators. An overwhelming 87% of respondents believed that they would benefit from CPD training and should undertake it regularly throughout their career.
